Instead, they gave generously and cheerfully according to their ability – not dutifully out of a command.
It is my conviction we are to do the same.
Personally, I do not have any issue at all with Christ followers who “tithe” to a local church home or fellowship. Many do this every week or month, and do so out of a love response to the Lord, for the benefit of others. And they are joyful. I will never cast a stone at this.
But I take strong opposition toward the teaching that guilts people into giving, using the Bible no less, that God opposes those who do not give back to Him what is His. This teaching holds up financial blessing (in the world’s eyes) as evidence of God’s favor, and casts a judging eye toward financial hardship (in the world’s eyes) as some kind of curse for withholding from God.
Ridiculous.
Further, I oppose teaching that says, give and you will be blessed – in the sense of more worldly blessing. Jesus knows nothing of this, in fact, He teaches just the opposite. In Him, we have all we need.
He is the blessing.
Jesus is the Storehouse. He is the Temple. He is the Offering. He is the High Priest. Jesus fulfills all the Law, including the one to “tithe.”"
